The Veiðivötn Highlands Tour takes you to the stunning Veiðivötn Highlands, also known as “Fishing Lakes.” This remote and breathtaking region of Iceland features around 50 volcanic crater lakes nestled in the highlands at an elevation of 570–590 meters above sea level. It’s surrounded by rugged terrain and black volcanic sands. The area offers some of the most stunning landscapes in Iceland. It is a must-visit for nature lovers and avid anglers alike.
The Veiðivötn Highlands Tour provides access to pristine waters. These lakes are renowned not only for their natural beauty but also for their rich fish stocks, particularly brown trout and Arctic char. The Veiðivötn lakes are considered some of the best fishing spots in Iceland. Permits are highly sought after, often passed down through generations due to their rarity and demand.
The Veiðivötn Highlands is famous for its brown trout. These fish are descendants of sea trout that became landlocked during the Ice Age. They range from 3 to 10 pounds. Some exceptional specimens can reach up to 16 pounds. The largest recorded brown trout caught here weighed an astounding 30 pounds!
In addition to the brown trout, the Arctic char thrives in these crystal-clear waters. Known for their vibrant colors and fierce fighting spirit, Arctic char range from 1 to 6 pounds. They offer an exciting challenge for anglers seeking variety.

Veiðivötn isn’t just a paradise for anglers—it’s a visual wonderland. The stark contrasts of volcanic black sands, shimmering lakes, and the vastness of Iceland’s highlands make this a perfect destination for photographers. Capture dramatic landscapes, unique wildlife, and the raw beauty of Iceland’s untouched nature.
Fishing in Veiðivötn is a thrilling and unforgettable experience, but the highlands of Iceland require proper preparation to ensure your comfort and enjoyment.
The weather in the highlands can be extremely unpredictable, often shifting from sunshine to wind or rain in minutes. To make the most of your day, it’s essential to wear warm, layered clothing. A durable, waterproof jacket is a must, along with a good cap, gloves, and thick, warm socks to keep you comfortable throughout the day. Even during the summer months, temperatures in the highlands can drop quickly, so being prepared ensures you stay focused on fishing instead of the cold.
The highlands are known for their midges—tiny but persistent insects that are especially active during the summer. These midges are more than just a nuisance; they can bite, leaving itchy, irritating marks. To protect yourself, a mosquito net is essential, along with a good insect repellent. These simple precautions will let you fully enjoy the serene beauty and fantastic fishing without distraction or discomfort.
All this can be purchased as an add-on from us before heading up there.
This is more than just a fishing trip—it’s a chance to immerse yourself in one of Iceland’s most extraordinary landscapes. Whether you’re here for the thrill of reeling in trophy fish, the peace of fishing in untouched waters, or the awe of Iceland’s natural beauty, Veiðivötn delivers an experience unlike any other.
With the right clothing, gear, and mindset, your trip to Veiðivötn will be an unforgettable adventure. From the tranquil beauty of the lakes to the thrill of catching Arctic char and brown trout, every moment in the highlands is a story waiting to be told.
Don’t just fish—create memories, capture breathtaking moments, and connect with the heart of Iceland’s highlands. Let Iceland-fishing.com be your guide to this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
